{"id":14641,"date":"2018-05-02T09:00:02","date_gmt":"2018-05-02T13:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/?p=14641"},"modified":"2019-09-27T02:11:46","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T06:11:46","slug":"violet-jessop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/museumhack.com\/violet-jessop\/","title":{"rendered":"Violet Jessop: The World&#8217;s Most Unsinkable Woman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the story of <b>Violet Jessop<\/b>, an Irish woman who survived not one, not two, but THREE of the most catastrophic ship disasters of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>After suffering through a childhood plagued with a serious illness, the ever-lucky Violet went on to survive the crash and near-sinking of RMS <i>Olympic<\/i> in 1911, the sinking of the <i>Britannic<\/i> in 1916\u2026 oh, and I almost forgot to mention, the sinking of the RMS <i>Titanic<\/i> in 1912.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Death Waits For No Man, But It Waited For Violet Jessop<\/h2>\n<p>Born in 1887 in Argentina, Violet Constance Jessop came out of the womb beating the odds.<\/p>\n<p>Violet was one of six surviving children born to the family tree of her Irish immigrant parents, out of a total of nine. The icy hand of death came for Jessop at an early age, inflicting her with a case of tuberculosis that was supposed to kill her, but fate had other plans.<\/p>\n<p>Other plans included being involved in the most famous ship disaster of all time. And also two more ship disasters\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Come out to the Coast, We&#8217;ll Get Together, Have a Few Laughs<\/h2>\n<p>At the ripe age of 23, Violet Jessop decided to follow in her mother\u2019s sea-legged footsteps and become a stewardess with the famed White Star Line.<span id='easy-footnote-1-14641' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/museumhack.com\/violet-jessop\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-14641' title=' Gowan, P. (August 26th, 2017). Encyclopedia Titanica '><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 1910, Violet Jessop got a job aboard the RMS <i>Olympic<\/i>. Everything seemed to be going swimmingly until the <i>Olympic<\/i> crashed into the HMS <i>Hawke<\/i>, a British warship. Neither ship sank, and both were able to make it back to port before having to get their afts smacked with towels in Davy Jones\u2019 Locker, but it was still a harrowing experience that would put anyone off working aboard a big ship ever again, right?<\/p>\n<p>Wrong.<\/p>\n<p>When the RMS <i>Titanic<\/i> (\u201cThe Ship of Dreams,\u201d \u201cThe Unsinkable Ship,\u201d \u201cThe Ship That Ten-Thousand Irishmen Built,\u201d The Ship That Served as the Backdrop for All Leonardo DiCaprio-Based Fantasies in 1997\u201d) needed a stewardess, Violet Jessop said, \u201cYes please, sign me up.\u201d*<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re sure she thought she couldn\u2019t <i>possibly<\/i> have to worry about another crash&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Her Heart Really Did Go On and On&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>On April 14, 1912, the<i> Titanic<\/i> struck an iceberg and plunged into the icy depths of the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to that sweet \u201cwomen and children first\u201d rule, Violet Jessop was loaded into a lifeboat, lucky lifeboat number 16, and a stranger\u2019s baby was thrust into her arms.<span id='easy-footnote-2-14641' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/museumhack.com\/violet-jessop\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-14641' title=' Conradt, S. (February 13th, 2015). Mental Floss '><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Thankfully, Jessop and CO. were rescued by <i>The Carpathia<\/i> before they had to make the decision of whom to eat to stay alive, because I think we can all agree that \u201cstranger\u2019s baby\u201d would have been first on the list. While on board <i>The Carpathia<\/i>, a woman (probably) (hopefully) the baby\u2019s mother, retrieved her baby (or just a baby) from Jessop.<\/p>\n<p>And that baby was Abraham Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>Just kidding.*<\/p>\n<h2>Loose Lips Aren&#8217;t the Only Thing That Sinks Ships<\/h2>\n<p>After surviving the near-sinking of one ship and the very full-sinking of another, Violet Jessop took a job on board yet another, the HMHS <i>Britannic<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>And if one of her friends didn\u2019t say, \u201cI\u2019ve got a sinking feeling about this,\u201d when Jessop told them the news, well then, they were no friend at all!<\/p>\n<p>The HMHS <i>Britannic<\/i> was a White Star liner that had been converted into a hospital ship during WWI. The poor ship didn\u2019t last more than 55 minutes until an unexplained explosion (or the curse of Violet Jessop) sank the ship killing 30 out of the 1,066 passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Violet Jessop, obviously, survived. She was 29 years old.<\/p>\n<p>After a very eventful first 6 years, Violet Jessop went on to work on large ships for another 34 years, retiring at 63. If workman\u2019s comp had been a thing, she would\u2019ve been set at 23.<\/p>\n<p>Was the Very Unsinkable Violet Jessop the luckiest ship stewardess in the world, or the least lucky?<\/p>\n<p>Or was she just the lost missing mermaid daughter Poseidon desperately tried to get back, no matter the cost?<\/p>\n<p>The world may never know. But we do know this: if you\u2019re ever on a ship with a woman named Violet Jessop, bring a life jacket.<\/p>\n<p>*Or some early 20th Century, Irish-accented version of that.<\/p>\n<p>*But it\u2019d
